Notebook N340S8 - Win2k boot-crash

Post by ^rooker »

[PROBLEM]
After installing the SiS 630 VGA chipset drivers on a notebook model "N340S8", W2k froze before making it to the login prompt.

The w2k-boot-splash-image was still shown, but the backlight of the display was turned off, so it was only slightly visible. Nevertheless: The notebook completely froze.

I've tried updating to SP4, upgrading DirectX to 9.0c, reinstalling the driver downloaded directly from the SiS homepage (filename: 630_208d_win2kxp.zip) - nothing worked.

[SOLUTION]
I've found a driver download for this notebook model at ZDNet (under section: "Uniwill Notebooks") - Search for "Uniwill N340S8 VGA" and you will find a driver download for several OS.
Here's the link for w2k: Uniwill N340S8 VGA (w2k)

That did the trick for me!
(We've got a copy of that driver on Das-Werkstatt servers - in case that the ZDNet won't work one day)
Jumping out of an airplane is not a basic instinct. Neither is breathing underwater. But put the two together and you're traveling through space!
