"reading directory .: Input/output error" after suspend

[PROBLEM]
I'm using an external USB harddrive with a notebook, got some shell terminals open, and I'm regularly putting it to suspend instead of turning the whole computer off.
When I resume from standby mode, my GNU/Linux system finds the harddisk and prompts me for mounting them. They're being mounted at the exact same location as before the standby, but when I return to the console terminal, the directories I was in give me the following error message:
It would be simple to just "re-enter" the directory I'm in, but I've got several terminals open and sometimes the pathnames are awkward to type again (I'm lazy).
Long story short, just type the following command to return to the directory you're currently in:
Tip: I'm using KDE's "konsole" terminal, which has the feature "send input to all sessions", so I only have to type "cd `pwd`" once for all open terminals.
