Thunderbird + Enigmail: Annoying slowdown

[PROBLEM]
Since upgrading from Thunderbird 3 to Thunderbird 7-11, when I select a list of mails and some of them are encrypted, Thunderbird slows down to zero - the application seems unresponsive. Almost like it'd be trying to crunch prime numbers...
[SOLUTION]
I think the reason was that Enigmail was set to decrypt/verify mails automatically. Since recent versions of Thunderbird come with folder/thread preview listing, Enigmail probably tried to decrypt/verify every mail in order to provide data for that listing.
Under the "OpenPGP" menu, de-select "Automatically Decrypt/Verify Messages".
I'd rather disable the folder/thread preview, but haven't found out, yet how to do that.
