Ubuntu Oneiric do-release-upgrade:

Post by ^rooker »

[PROBLEM]
I wanted to do upgrade a Xubuntu Oneiric (11.10) to the current LTS "Precise Pangolin" (12.04).

I've had my upgrade-manager (GUI) settings configured to:

Code: Select all

Notify me of a new Ubuntu version: For long-term support versions
Yet, no newer version to upgrade to was showing up in the GUI.

Since I do prefer commandline anyway, I entered the command:

Code: Select all

sudo do-release-upgrade
Unfortunately (and suprisingly) it refused to do anything, but returned:
Checking for a new ubuntu release
No new release found
Running it with the commandline parameter "-d" (for development / non-LTS versions), also returned the same: nothing.

[SOLUTION]
Take a look at the contents of "/etc/update-manager/release-upgrades". The configuration in my case was set to:

Code: Select all

prompt=lts
...but the comment for the option "lts" said the following:
# lts - Check to see if a new LTS release is available. The upgrader
# will attempt to upgrade to the first LTS release available after
# the currently-running one. Note that this option should not be
# used if the currently-running release is not itself an LTS
# release, since in that case the upgrader won't be able to
# determine if a newer release is available.
Since my current version was NOT LTS, I modified it to:

Code: Select all

prompt=normal
Save it and then run "do-release-upgrade" again. Now things worked.
