firewall (iptables) on OpenWRT v0.9 White Russian

I'm running OpenWRT v0.9 "White Russian" on a WRT54GL for many years happily now.

Unfortunately, most of the documentation I find for OpenWRT iptables/netfilter nowadays applies to newer versions - and is therefore incompatible with my setup

Well, White Russian was released 10 years ago
Therefore I'm writing down some notes which docs/configuration to find that applies to this "classic" setup.

Iptables/Firewall rules:

There's a file called "/etc/config/firewall" - but it seems that it's not read in this setup.
