ifup: "SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address"

ifup: "SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address"

[PROBLEM]
On Debian 6 (Squeeze), I have network aliases on one network card.
When I try to bring them up I get an error:

$ ifconfig eth0:1 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
The configuration looked like this

iface eth0:1 inet static
    address ad-converter1.dva-profession.local
    netmask 255.255.255.0

[SOLUTION]
It works when I use "ifup":

Code: Select all

$ ifup eth0:1
...although something is still not 100% clean, as these message follow:
Unable to find suitable address.
Hm... :? :cry:
Jumping out of an airplane is not a basic instinct. Neither is breathing underwater. But put the two together and you're traveling through space!

I recently learned that ifconfig is considered deprecated and replaced by 'ip' in the near-middle future, so try to use that instead :)
