HowTo find serialnumber of FTDI USB chip

When dealing with FTDI USB-to-UART devices, you might need to address them by their serial number.
Here's how you find that number:

1) Attach the device to your PC
Best to connect one at a time. Otherwise, how would you know which serial belongs to which adapter?

2) Approach A: Using "dmesg":

$ dmesg | grep -B 2 "SerialNumber:"

This will return something like this (for each FTDI device connected):

[1176637.422076] usb 2-1.7: Product: FT232R USB UART
[1176637.422077] usb 2-1.7: Manufacturer: FTDI
[1176637.422079] usb 2-1.7: SerialNumber: A6028XXX

2) Approach B: Using "udevadm":

$ udevadm info -a -n /dev/ttyUSB0 | grep -i serial

Will return something like this:

SUBSYSTEMS=="usb-serial"
ATTRS{serial}=="A6028XXX"
ATTRS{serial}=="0000:00:1d.0"
